Modeling of critical cutting speed of white layer formation in the hard-cutting process

The white layer formed during the hard-cutting process impacts surface quality and mechanical properties of a workpiece significantly. Obtaining accurate critical cutting speed for formation is beneficial to control parameter selection cutting. Accordingly, combining with finite element (FE) method, model was developed based on solid phase transformation free energy theory, in which thermal–mechanical effects were considered. To calculate change process, an austenite driving force established. This indicated that temperature, stress, strain can provide required process. An FE created obtain thermal parameters. AISI 52100 hardened steel predicted this study. result accordance experimental result. Moreover, relationship between parameters analyzed explicitly. We found increased tool rake angle decreased increase thickness flank wear.
